Oaxaca is one of the poorest states in Mexico and many rural indigenous people do not have a skilled trade, thus remaining impoverished. En Via is changing that and we'd like to help.
En Via provides indigenous women with interest-free micro-loans to help create or expand their small businesses. This enables them to better provide for themselves and their families. Since 2008, EnVia has given out over 1500 loans to almost 400 women.
En Via's educational programs impart women with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions regarding their businesses, personal finances, and use of loans.
En Via's responsible tourism model offers travelers a chance to meet the indigenous women working in the micro-loan program. The money made from operating the tours funnels back into the communities in the form of new, interest-free loans. We attended one tour and we got a genuine glimpse into the local culture and observed first hand how micro-finance works and the real impact our tour cost has on the community.
